Patience & Consistency

In my opinion, patience is the hardest element of health and fitness to practice. Almost everyone, myself included, expects instantaneous results when starting a new diet/exercise regimen. Unfortunately, 1-week worth of healthy eating and exercise won’t erase years worth of poor nutritional choices and lack of activity, but it will help bring you closer towards your ultimate goal.

It’s easy to get inside your own head when you feel like your results are slowing and start to get discouraged. Thoughts of “this isn’t working” start to slowly creep into your mind and you begin to wonder why you’re even bothering. I know that I can be guilty of this especially when the scale stops moving or worse starts creeping back up. Whenever I hit this point, I stop to remind myself of my goals and why this is important to me. I remind myself why I started in the first place and tell myself that I’m actually doing a really great job and that the results I want will come, eventually. I know that is all much easier said than done, but with practice you’ll learn to have patience and trust that the process will work.

Consistency in your diet/exercise routine goes right along with patience. While this element, may be easier to practice it still does present its challenges. Consistency for me is day in and day out making choices that will help me with my long-term goals.

Consistency, especially with eating habits, can really take some practice. Everyone has slip-ups and overeats or indulges in a craving. When I slip-up or indulge in something I make sure to get right back on track. I don’t say to myself I’ll get back on track tomorrow or I’ll get back on track Monday. From personal experience, I can honestly say that if you tell yourself “Oh I’ll get back on track tomorrow” more often than not that’s not the case. There could be weeks or months of “tomorrows” before you end up back on track and further from your goal than where you initially were.

If you truly want to achieve long term success with your health and fitness goals, you need to be patient and consistent. Putting in daily efforts towards being consistent and learning to be patient and trust the process will pay off in the long run.
