Patience & Consistency

time-1485384_1920

In my opinion, patience is the hardest element of health and fitness to practice. Almost everyone, myself included, expects instantaneous results when starting a new diet/exercise regimen. Unfortunately, 1-week worth of healthy eating and exercise won’t erase years worth of poor nutritional choices and lack of activity, but it will help bring you closer towards your ultimate goal.

It’s easy to get inside your own head when you feel like your results are slowing and start to get discouraged. Thoughts of β€œthis isn’t working” start to slowly creep into your mind and you begin to wonder why you’re even bothering. I know that I can be guilty of this especially when the scale stops moving or worse starts creeping back up. Whenever I hit this point, I stop to remind myself of my goals and why this is important to me. I remind myself why I started in the first place and tell myself that I’m actually doing a really great job and that the results I want will come, eventually. I know that is all much easier said than done, but with practice you’ll learn to have patience and trust that the process will work.

Consistency in your diet/exercise routine goes right along with patience. While this element, may be easier to practice it still does present its challenges. Consistency for me is day in and day out making choices that will help me with my long-term goals.

Consistency, especially with eating habits, can really take some practice. Everyone has slip-ups and overeats or indulges in a craving. When I slip-up or indulge in something I make sure to get right back on track. I don’t say to myself I’ll get back on track tomorrow or I’ll get back on track Monday. From personal experience, I can honestly say that if you tell yourself β€œOh I’ll get back on track tomorrow” more often than not that’s not the case. There could be weeks or months of β€œtomorrows” before you end up back on track and further from your goal than where you initially were.

If you truly want to achieve long term success with your health and fitness goals, you need to be patient and consistent. Putting in daily efforts towards being consistent and learning to be patient and trust the process will pay off in the long run.

Love, love, LOVE!! We are definitely a society of instant gratification, so when redesigning the way our bodies eat and move, when we don’t see immediate results, it’s so easy to be discouraged. Thank you for the inspiration to get active and stay consistent today <3

I do try to jog daily, and that seems to help me. I never expect quick results. So long as my pants button, I’m good to go.

Great information! As a fellow athlete, I know this to be true more than anything. When I stop training for a period of time and get back into it, I always expect myself to be right back where I left off and it can be frustrating to not seem immediate success. So important to be patient and confident with yourself that you will get the results you seek if you stick with it.

Agreed! It can be so frustrating when you’re not where you should be.

I see your point. For me it’s a matter of concentration to the goal. If you are lacking this then patience is a factor. If you don’t, then patience isn’t. I hope I am making sense πŸ™‚

Focusing on the goal is just as important as having the patience to achieve it, I agree πŸ™‚

Personally, my biggest struggle with fitness is staying consistent. I often find myself making poor excuses for why I can’t exercise that day. Something I hope to fix soon!

    • admin April 29, 2018 Reply

Take it one day at a time or try to fit in smaller bursts of exercise throughout the day. I typically like to exercise first thing in the morning before any excuses can get in the way.

Patience for sure is hard. The fact is that we are humans and we will mess up. However it’s hard to keep that in mind when starting a new diet or routine.

I am NOT the most patient person in the world by far. I think its one of the areas that I am lacking in. I want results and I want them now!! Haha, this post was so relatable. Thanks for sharing! πŸ™‚
