Stay Active & Healthy During the Fall

Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I look forward to it every year. I love the changing leaves and the cool, crisp air. Fall also seems to be the time of year where people start ease up on their health and fitness goals. With kids going back to school, football games, and all the upcoming holidays it can be hard to stay motivated or to make time to be active. I’m going to share some of our favorite ways to stay active and healthy during the fall.

1. Walk

Walking is one of my absolute favorite things to do in the fall. Walking in the fall is so much more enjoyable than walking in the summer. The weather is nicer and the mosquitos are gone! There’s something about being able to take a walk without getting mosquito bites, its amazing. In the fall we always make sure to take family walks as often as possible. If I have time, I’ll even go for two walks a day.

2. Go Apple Picking.

We always make sure to go apple picking. We live in a unique area where we have four different apple farms that are less than twenty minutes away. Spending the day apple picking is a great way to get some light exercise! Not only will you be walking around the farm all day picking your apples, but when you go home you refrigerator will be stocked for weeks with apples. There are plenty of healthy, easy recipes to be made with apples. Plus, I always think that farm fresh apples taste way better than those that are bought in the grocery store.

3. Hiking

We’ve had overly humid, and just downright disgusting weather this summer. Most days it was too humid to even be able to breathe outside. Fall hikes are much more scenic than summer hikes. Plus, the weather is so much cooler. I never found hiking in 100 degree weather to be enjoyable, plus the bugs are just awful. Hiking can be considered light exercise or strenuous depending on the trail. Some of our favorite trails are around 5-7 miles. Hiking is a great way to spend an afternoon being active with the family.

4. Use Your Crockpot

I’ll be the first to admit that during the summer I completely ignore and disregard my crockpot. When its hot and humid the last thing I want to do is eat something really hot and hearty. Once the fall and cooler weather hits, we’ll use our crockpot all the time! There are so many healthy recipes that you can make in your crockpot. Not only is the crockpot great for making healthy meals, but its also great for people who are really busy. I used to love knowing that while I was at work my dinner was at home cooking.

5. Develop a Routine

When the summer ends, most people tend to get back to their busy lifestyles and schedules. From September to the end of the year people tend to get busier and busier. If there is any advice that you’re going to take from this, let developing a routine be it. Start implementing your new habits now because we all know that as the fall season continues and the holidays start to creep up you’ll only be busier. Implementing your new habits now will help you later!
